Folket Bortafor Nordavinden - Sagnamadr (2018)

Viking markets are a popular and entertaining form of historical reenactment to be found mostly in Scandinavia. It is the perfect place to meet history enthusiasts and talented craftsmen in a rural and festive setting. There, reenactors wearing period costumes can be seen showcasing their art, taking part in battles and playing songs. The latter is what Benny Braaten, founding member of Folket Bortafor Nordavinden, and his troupe have been doing since the late nineties. They are also providing the background music for the videos of the Swedish company Grimfrost, which specializes in recreating various products inspired by the Viking era. They have recently published Sagnamadr, the debut effort by the Norwegian trio. The title refers to the Old Norse sagnamaðr, which literally translates to "sagas-man", as in the author of sagas. Thus, the arresting artwork depicts the stern face of a warrior, complete with eye black and the band logo as a forehead tattoo. The forest landscape is visible through the reflection in his eyes, just as he himself is a reflection of what it must have been to live in such times. Accordingly, it comes as no surprise that the music should feel earthly and primal. Hence, the drums are prominent from beginning to end, permeating every track with trance-inducing rhythms. There is little use of gimmicks here, the music sounds very organic and remains faithful to its live-oriented nature. Furthermore, the multi-layered and complementary voices are used to great effect and constitute an instrument in and of themselves. Indeed, Braaten's voice feels rather gravelly and ceremonial, while Holberg is on the more wild and unpredictable side. Traditional instruments such as the jaw harp and various blowing horns can also be heard, as well as recordings of animals and other nature sounds which further enhance the tribal atmosphere.

Overall, Sagnamadr is a remarkably raw and minimalistic entry into the genre. The many years of live experience featured by Folket Bortafor Nordavinden give this debut a humble and authentic sound that similar artists often fail to achieve.
